Faith Expression at St. Philip School

Picture
St. Philip School School philosophy exists in every aspect of school life. All that we do is based on our philosophy of who we are as an educational entity endeavoring to instill a Catholic life and quality education in the young people whom we serve. We believe in the holistic approach to education exemplified through the teaching of religion and gospel values. St. Philip School provides a versatile program which recognizes the uniqueness of all individual students and incorporates this into the curriculum.

Students attend Mass regularly with the whole school and as a class. The students participate in planning the liturgy, act as lectors, altar servers and some participate in the choir. Formal instructional programs for reception of the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation are part of the curriculum of the appropriate grades and the students are given the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation with their class at least twice a year. The entire student body joins in prayer and reflection at the beginning of the school day with the principal over the public address system.

GRACE Program

The students also experience many forms of traditional Catholic worship in the G. R. A. C. E. Program. The GRACE Program (Gifts Re-Affirming a Catholic Education) is a special project that has the dual purpose of fund raising while giving our children the opportunity to gather once a month and experience many of traditional Catholic forms of religious expression. In addition, it teaches the children to pray for those who are in need of prayer or support the school.  School families, parishioners, or friends may request remembrance in the monthly GRACE celebration by sending a note to the school office or by using the form published monthly in the Church bulletin. The person requesting prayers for a living or deceased loved one receives a card and a bookmark appropriate for the request (recent death, anniversary of death, new baby, wedding anniversary, birthday, special achievement or occasion, thank you, special intention, Mother's Day, Father's Day or Christmas) to send to the person to be remembered or his family. The names of both the person enrolled and the donor are published monthly in the parish bulletin. There is no set amount requested for a donation and funds from this program go directly to support school.

There is a monthly GRACE prayer service at which the students pray by name for the intentions of both the donors and those enrolled. The prayer services focus on such traditional forms of Catholic faith expressions as the Rosary, Benediction, May Crowning, Stations of the Cross, Novena, meditation, exploration of the lives of the Saints, Angels, celebration of special feasts and liturgical seasons, or highlighting of the Angelway Virtues. The program, which has been a part of St. Philip School for more than 20 years, continues to help our students learn and practice their Faith in a very meaningful and visible way.

Parents and parishioners are always welcome to come and pray with the children. Dates for the GRACE Program are as follows: Sept 26-Guardian Angels, Oct 24-Living Rosary, Nov 23 –Angelway Virtue Responsibility, Dec 22-Christmas Novena, Jan 31- Angelway Virtue Compassion, Feb 24 – Stations of the Cross, April 30 - Angelway Virtue Self-Discipline, May 21- May Crowning & Mother’s Day, June 8- Angelway Virtue Friendship & Father’s Day.

(All GRACE services are held at 12:20pm in Church unless otherwise indicated)
